Spanish Subjunctive

The Spanish subjunctive is usually expressed as a possibility, necessity, desire, or emotion. If you want to express one of these you will simply take the infinitive form of the verb drop the ending (-ar, -er, -ir) and add an -er ending for -ar verbs, and add an -ar ending for -er, and -ir verbs.

How about seeing some examples? I'll bet that would help....

Suppose you want to say, I don't want him to speak.

No quiero que él hable.

Usually you would conjugate the verb 'hablar' as él habla (he speaks).

But when you use the subjunctive you change the -ar ending to an -er ending. And the ending for the subject el in an -er verb would be e.

Here are the endings for each type of verb:

HablarChangesComerChangesVivirChanges
hablohablecomocomavivoviva
hablashablescomescomasvivesvivas
hablahablecomecomaviveviva
hablamoshablemoscomemoscomamosvivimosvivamos
habláishabléiscoméiscomáisvivísviváis
habanhablencomencomanvivenvivan

Got all that! That is a lot of information in one lesson.

So how would you say, You want your family to live in Mexico?

Yo quiero que mi familia viva en México.

So how did the lesson go? Feel free to review the video or chart as often as you need. If you're ready to find out what you know, let's go to the Subjunctive Mini Quiz.
