Past Tenses - Past PerfectThere
are several
Spanish past tenses. In this lesson we'll cover the past perfect.
Basically,
the past perfect is used when you want to say that an event occurred
prior to another past event.
Alittle confusing?
If
you want to say you went to the store (past event), but it had already
closed (prior event).
In English the past perfect is
always constructed using the verb have in the had form, and adding
the past participle after the verb.
I went to the
the store after it had
closed.
Spanish isn't too different.
We've
already covered the Spanish
past participle. Now you just need to know how to conjugate
the verb haber
(to have). We'll be conjugating as follows....
había
habías
había
habíamos
habíeis
habían
So how about some examples?
How would you
say, The store (el
mercado) had closed
(cerrado)?
El
mercado había cerrado.
How would you
say, We had arrived
(llegado)?
Nosotros
habíamos llegado.
Just remember the
conjugated form of haber + past participle = past perfect.
